Blog Post #1 - Burt's Bees is the bee's knees.
Part One:
After the first meeting, I feel even more confident that this class will provide me the opportunities and experiences that I need to start a business career with confidence. Currently, I am unsure of which sector I want to focus on in the communications world. I feel that the off-site experiences will help me determine what area I am most interested in, and give me a jumping off point to start my career. I am interested in learning more about the dynamics in big organizations versus small ones, as well as the relationship between clients and agencies. Because we have the opportunity to interact with a range of business people during each class, I think I could gain the insight that I crave. I am also looking forward to the class discussions because they will bolster my listening skills, and help me becoming a stronger speaker. Lastly, I want to learn how to craft powerful and insightful questions that help extract relevant information that adds depth to the conversation at hand.
With all of these tools, I will undoubtably gain the confidence needed in this field that is relatively new to me. With new insights and exposure to networking, I will be able to work more proactively towards my goals. Most importantly, after this course, and program in general, I believe that I will have focused my ambitions and determined a path that leads to my desired future.
Part Two:
In an environment that is so thoroughly inundated with brands and media messages, I found it difficult to pick just one to focus on. My daily life is filled with the use of innumerable brand name products, and they all seem important to me. In attempt to pick a product, I sifted through activities that without fail show up in my daily life. Honestly, I am a sucker for beauty products and often fall victim to the generous claims made by the advertisements. I wanted to follow a brand whose advertising and story not only caught my attention, but kept it. This is how I landed on Burt’s Bees.
My initial interaction with Burt’s Bees was with the standard lip balm--the gateway product into the line. When this product proved that it was effective, I began to explore into other territories of the brand. I read many reviews online and watched several rave reviews on YouTube. This only confirmed by beliefs and strengthened my desire to buy more Burt’s Bees products. Soon I had lotions, toners, facewash and more, all of which matched or surpassed my expectations. The consistent superb performance of the products earned my brand loyalty and also inspired me to tell my friends about the products I loved.
One aspect of their products that I quite appreciate is the use of ‘natural’ ingredients. On their website they note that they are working “with leading manufacturers in the United States as well as the Natural Products Associated to define what “natural” means in personal care. [Taking] out the guesswork for shoppers, the NPA created this seal”. I like that I can purchase a product with this seal and know that it is at least 95% natural. Their use of natural products such as willow bark, chamomile and beeswax is refreshing to find in a market that includes so many synthetic products. I also appreciate that the company attempts to be transparent in the ingredients they put in their products. The website offers links to the Natural Ingredients Guide ( http://www.burtsbees.com/ingredients ) as well as the Ingredient Glossary ( http://www.burtsbees.com/c/ingredient-glossary.html ).
To keep up-to-date with current communications practices, Burt’s Bees created a Facebook page. On their page they promote new products by offering coupons, and by displaying awards given to them by other media outlets such as Marie Claire magazine. They also prove to be interactive and responsive to their consumers; one customer commented on the page about the coupon not working and Burt’s Bees quickly attended to this problem.
I am excited to learn more about this fascinating and wholesome brand as the year goes on!
