The Target is You: IBM Smarter Planet Update
Just joining Instagram? Better late than never. Last week,
IBM launched their official instagram account. They make it known in their
“about me” section that their instagram follows IBM’s social computing guidelines.
Instagram is an important social media tool and it is
important for IBM to follow through with it since their goal is to create a
smarter planet. They must utilize all social media outlets to get the word out.
IBM Smarter Planet is known for their stimulating visuals and Instagram is an
excellent way to use that to their advantage.
I was surprised that IBM did not have their own instagram
earlier. I knew Smarter Planet did not yet have a personal account but I was
not aware that IBM did not have one.
IBM Smarter Planet uses visuals and articles so Twitter and
Facebook are the most effective outlets so that their content can be retweeted
or reshared. Instagram does not have the function to reshare other people’s
content with your own followers but I think that might be something for the
future. IBM may not have found it necessary for them to have Instagram because
Twitter, Facebook, and their own blog served their needs.
Instagram will nicely complement their already effective use
of social media. They are doing a fantastic job at being active on both outlets
and posting content everyday. I am looking forward to seeing IBM’s Instagram
posts and making note of any of the ones in relation to Smarter Planet. They have already gathered quite a following in the past few days!
Current Event
Has anyone used Storify for their tweets before? When I was
at USC, a group of us would hold weekly twitter chats and would use Storify to
monitor the most important tweets.
Well right now Storify has got competition!
Now Twitter Lets You Make Multiple Timelines via Mashable
Twitter unveiled the ability to make custom timelines
Tuesday — a move that puts the newly-public company squarely in Storify's
territory. Users can create their own timelines around particular events,
filled with tweets from particular users and topics.
"Whether you want to collect the best Tweets about a TV
show or help people find the latest information about fast-moving real-time
situations, custom time lines let you give everyone a place to follow
along," wrote Brian Ellin, product manager for the Twitter platform.
You'll need Tweetdeck, the Twitter client that the company
bought two years ago, in order to make the custom timelines. Developers can
also make one by hand using the Twitter API.
Tweetdeck users will be familiar with the concept, since the
service has long allowed its users to create custom columns of content. What
has changed is that those columns are now, in effect, portable. The custom
timelines will be fully embeddable, just as Storify's are.
Not all Tweetdeck users can make the custom timelines yet,
but Twitter says it will be rolling the option out to everyone over the next
few days.
The one advantage Storify still has over Twitter's custom
timelines: it can incorporate Facebook updates too.
